OLD PEPPERSASS

Pepperasass, the original Cog Railway locomotive was built in 1866 and helped to build the railway.  After retirement it was not scrapped and made visits to various shows and fairs.  After returning to New Hampshire in 1929, it was decided to run Old Peppersass one more time.  The day came and Peppersass was run most of the way up the mountain.  On the down trip, it derailed and was wrecked on Jacob's Ladder.  Famous White Mountain Photographer Winston Pote was on board Peppersass when it began the wild descent.  He jumped off and fortunately his movie camera remained intact.  While there are no know photos or video of the actual wreck taking place, he shot some great footage.  I have put a short clip on the site.  You can click  here to download the 500k clip now.  It will be permanently located on the Old Peppersass page.  You can download Real Player G2 from this link if you do not have it.

Jacob's Ladder

The section of the track known as Jacob's Ladder is located at the tree line.  It is the steepest part of the track with a grade of 37.41%.  This roughly means that the front end of a coach is about 14 feet higher than the rear.  This video clip shot by Donald Bray clearly shoes the grade.  Click here to download this 482k file now.  The clip will be located permanently on the All Aboard for a Round Trip page.
